My Calendars shows a (1) next to it.  What does it mean?

You probably have something flagged in one of your email folders that is tied
to a date. Right click if you want and mark read

that's an unread item. either search for unread items, use a table view and
browse your appointments for a bolded item or just r-click on the calendar
and mark all as read.
