I have a need to schedule my vacation as "out fo office" on my calendar, as
well as show it as an event on my manager's calendar.  The only way I know to
do it now is a two step process of putting the appointment on my calendar
with the time set as "out of office", and then in a second step, scheduling a
meeting with my boss, selecing "all day event" and changing "show time as" to
"Free".  Is there a way to combine these two steps into one process?

Thanks

You could send the meeting request and then edit the copy in your own calendar to show it as Out of Office, but not send an update of that change to your boss.
