Open the calendar, select the meeting, and press Delete.

I tried that (before this post!). Double-click, right-click, hover, nothing
happens. I just see a continuous "Tentative" line for 10 months on my
schedule. I tried at the beginning and at the end of that line, too; no way
to get it off my schedule.
Are there any other tricks?

I should have added that the meeting notice is not visible anywhere on the
calendar. Just when people look at my schedule for available times it shows
every day, all day, as 'Tentative' (except where I actually have accepted a
meeting, then it is Accepted).

Try a table view of your calendar, like Events and perhaps the item will be
more readily visible.
