Rephrasing my question:
If I have an email I am sending out with the dates of an event written in
it, is there a way to add a link inside the message that people can click on
and have that event automatically added to their outlook calendar?

only if you post an ical on a webserver.

Hello,

you should simply send the appointment as an attachement.
There are few possibilities to do:
- right click on an appointment in your calendar and click "forward"
- open an appointment and choose "forward"
- save an appointment as a file and add it to your mail

I'm assuming you're talking about recipients not in your Exchange
organization (assuming you're on an exchange server anyways), so, you'd
first create the appointment in your calendar.  Save it out as an iCal and
just host it on a web server somewhere and just link to it.  The plus is
that anyone who has a calendar program that understands ical can use it, not
just outlook users.
