Every time that I modify any appoinment in my calendar, then hit save and
close, the changes to not save and the appointment automatically turns into a
weekly recurring event even though I didn't set up a recurrence.  Is this a
defect?  Are there and packages to take to fix this?  I cannot find any
settings that would cause this to happen...

Look in Add or Remove Programs for an app named Outlookaddinsetup and remove
it.
