In Outlook 2007 every appointment I enter is made a recurring one and it is a
hell of a job to get rid of.  What am I doing wrong?

You are doing nothing wrong - new Dell right?  Uninstall the
Outlookaddinsetup program in Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs.  It will
most likely be under Cyberlink.
