How can I change the set of  (ugly) colors assigned to calendar

Is there a way to just have the calendar colorless, or change the harsh set
of colors that are available now?

Maybe yes and maybe no but no one knows since you decided your Outlook version was not in play here.

Oops, I have Office 2007

Do you mean the background color?  Simply make it white in the Calendar options.  Do you mean the categories?  They cannot be changed.

Therein lies the problem in my "Calendar-Tools-Options-Calendar Options
Default color" there is NO white or any really light color. Is something
wrong with my  Outlook?

Hmm - never noticed that.   I use the silver theme and have my background set to a bluish tint.  I never notice the colors.
