It may be a .ics appointment you downloaded from a website. If you want to see what it is, display the calendar in an appointment view (turn on the advanced toolbar and use the dropdown) and add the "unread" field from Field Chooser. Sort on this column.
Otherwise, right click the calendar and select "mark all as read" if you don't really care.

Thanks heaps, totally worked. It was a meeting that saved to the "default"
folder from a public folder.
