make a birthday in contact info appear in calendar automatically

i want to make all birthdays and anniversaries that i enter into a contacts
information appear automatically in the calander.  it used to do it and all
of a sudden all my birthdays etc are not showing up

Is this in the default calendar?  Does each Contact have its own contact entry or are all of the entries on one contact item?
