My office is small and we are running Outlook and Office basic.  We used a
shared calendar.  I am tasked with making sure that everyone gets to where
they need to be.  However I am unable to set up reminders on my computer for
shared calendar events.  "The error states "The reminder for " yadi yada"
will not appear because the item is in a folder that doesn't support
reminders"

I have looked in the preferences of the root folder and there does not seem
to be a way of changing it.

If some one knows please help.  I had to get a third party freeware to do
this job.  Sad, very sad.

Non-default folders cannot generate reminders.  You need a third-party tool
for that.  See
http://www.slovaktech.com/remindermanager.htm for one such.
