not accepted appointments

With Exchange/Outlook 2003 clients, is it normal that a not yet accepted
appointment is already in the calendar of the invited member, or should it
not appear there before the appoitiment is accepted?

Yes.  It should appear with "Show time as" set to "Tentative.  It should
appear in the calendar with the blue hash marks around it indicating a
tentative event.
