What does the number (#) represent in My Calendars?

When I enter Outlook Calendar, under My Calendars in the upper left, I see
Calendar (3). What does the number 3 mean and what is it used for?

You have 3 unread items in your calendar.  Right click the calendar and select the option to mark all as read if you don't care to know what they are.
