Without recognized precipitating action, I am unable to view a calendar.  Not
the month view or the daily view, or any view.  All I get when I click
"Calendar" in the navigation pane is a tabular listing of recurring events.
How do I get my view of the actual calendar back?

Right click in your toolbar and enable the Advanced Toolbar.  Use the dropdown to set your preferred view.
