I changed a number of b'days/ appointments and now I have two reminders that
keep popping up. When I try to dismiss them it says:

"Cannot open the item for this reminder. Cannot locate the reoccurence
information for this appointment." How do I get rid of this. It is really
quite annoying."

The first thing to try is the /cleanreminders command switch.
