Came here looking for a solution to same (similar?) problem... The message I receive at home (Outlook XP) from work (Outlook 2000) is not recognized as a meeting request by Outlook XP. In the other direction (XP to 2000), it works. The subject of the email is the meeting name, and here is the content of the email I received at home

You need to force RTF as the server may be stripping it. Double click on
the recipient's name and select to always send in Rich Text Format.

Thanks Milly. That put me down the path to get it to work... When I double-clicked on the recipient, it opened up my Contact entry for myself at home. The email config for myself was set to "always RTF", but on a lark I typed my email address without this and double-clicked it per your instructions and THIS ONE WORKED
Why doesn't the Contact version of my email address work even though it is set for RTF messaging
