New for of virus??

Today something unexpected happened.  It couldn't have been a virus because my updated scanner did not detect anything.  Outlook generated upcoming appointments alerts with advertisements.  I did not set them up.  I looked in my calendar and there was nothing there for that date, Saturday, February 21, 2004.  I have someone sharing their calendar with me but his doesn't have anything there either.  Did anyone else experience this today?  What could this have been

If you mean pop-up ads, it wasn't that.  I wasn't browsing.  I had just turned on my computer and opened outlook
