Does anyone know of a way to prevent / disallow attempts to create clashing
or overlapping appointments in a calendar???

Cheers

Tools->options->calendar options->resource scheduling->do not accept
conflicting appointments.

Um... no such option in 2003? There's a similarly worded one about not
accepting conflicting meeting requests but I was hoping for a more obvious
and definite one for *any* attempt to created *any* kind of conflicting
calendar item.

This only works if a request is made with 'plan a meeting'.  If a person
with author/editor rights goes in through the meeting room calendar, they
will not be prevented from booking a double meeting.
