Turn off reminders for back-dated appointments?

It seems to me that Outlook should be able to automatically recognize that
if you are entering an appointment for a date before the current date (e.g.,
to keep a record of how time was spent while away from the computer) you are
unlikely to need a reminder for that appointment.  Is there some option
setting I am missing?  I want reminders by default for future appointments,
but find it quite annoying to have to uncheck the little reminder box for
every past entry.   Doesn't Outlook know the difference between past and
future?

You will need to remove the reminder manually.  Outlook does not know if you
do or don't want reminders for past appointments only when you enter them,
when they have passed with Outlook closed or what.

I note that Outlook USED to know the difference.  Up through Outlook 2002
the standard behavior was that past-dated appointments did not have the
reminder box checked, even if you had a default reminder set for future
appointments.  Who decided to fix what wasn't broken?

Is there a way to programatically change this behavior?

Can code be written that inspects the appointment on creation and compares
the appointment time to now() and if > now() turns on the reminder and if
less than now() turns off the reminder before the reminder event is fired?

Darren

PS - I'm also annoyed that this was changed from all prior versions of
Outlook to this version -- honestly, why would anyone ever want a reminder to
appear for an appointment entered in the past!?
