I have tried the inbox "detect and repair" function twice, and have been
vigilant about keeping up to date with any Microsoft updates for XP
Professional or for Outllook. I am not on an exchange server - I am running
this on a single PC at home via a cable connection.
I've tried a number of the repairs recommended on this thread, including
running the "outlook.exe\cleanreminders" suggestion, but to no avail. I'd be
temped to just delete Outlook and reinstall, but I'd need to reinstall my
.pst files and well, and they are probably contaminated as well. I can't
afford to dump all my data... aagghhhhh! Very frustrating. Thanks for your
reply by the way

You could try to create/open a new pst and create a calendar folder in it.
then on you current calendar select View-By Category and select all, copy
and paste to the newly created calendar..and then see if the items in the new
folder work correctly.
It won't hurt... don't know if it fixes anything.
