iCalendar .ics file type missing

I am supporting a user who is unable to open an Outlook attachment. The
attachment is a meeting request from the HR dept. It is a .ics file type.
Windows/Office does not recognize this file type. When viewing the file
types through Tools/Folder Options/File Types, the .ics type is missing. How
has this happened? I have run the detect and repair and I have completely
uninstalled/reinstalled the entire Office suite, all to no avail. Anyone
know how I can resolve this issue? Thank you in advance for any responses.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
