Bob - 30 Nov 2004 14:37 GMT Even though my calendar reminder (and reminder.wav sound) is set to on, none of my reminders ever pop up on my screen. They used to work, but stopped recently, and none of the help desk folks here on Robins AFB can seem to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Ken Slovak - [MVP - Outlook] - 30 Nov 2004 15:10 GMT Try starting Outlook with the /resetfolders and /cleanreminders switches. In the Start, Run dialog:
outlook.exe /resetfolders /cleanreminders
Then press Enter. See if that helps.

The other thing that has not been working for me is future-dated e-mails not being sent. I hope the two are related and this is working for me too!

I am having the same problems as Bob. I typed the link in the dialog box but it did not fix the problem. Am I doing something wrong.

If no errors then you might have a corrupted profile. Another possibility is if you are using a PDA and synching with Outlook.
You can create a new Outlook profile from scratch and see if that works.
If you use a PDA and synch software make sure you are using the latest version. Some of that stuff synchs the hidden Reminders folder and ends up corrupting it.

I typed the following message in the start - run dialog box outlook.exe/resetfolders/cleanreminders
Did I type it wrong? Am I missing something? Thank you:-)

Below you wrote, "If you use a PDA and synch software make sure you are using the latest version. Some of that stuff synchs the hidden Reminders folder and ends up corrupting it." I am using Intellisync to sync my Blackberry with Outlook, I have run Outlook with /cleanreminders and /resetfolders and I still get the "There was a problem reading one or more of your reminders..." message when I start Outlook. If Intellisync has corrupted my Reminders folder how do I fix it?

Ken Slovak - [MVP - Outlook] - 26 Apr 2005 14:20 GMT If those switches don't work and a new profile doesn't work and this keeps happening I'd suggest using different synch software.

> Ken, > [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > corrupted > my Reminders folder how do I fix it? BarleySystems - 26 Apr 2005 14:38 GMT Based on your response below I am assuming that the only solution, when PDA software corrupts your reminders folder and /cleanreminders does not work, is to create a new profile? I did that and it worked. Thanks:) It is a shame that my PDA has caused me to have to create a new profile and import all of my PST files, but at least now it works. Thanks again:)
> If those switches don't work and a new profile doesn't work and this keeps > happening I'd suggest using different synch software. [quoted text clipped - 10 lines] > > corrupted > > my Reminders folder how do I fix it? Ken Slovak - [MVP - Outlook] - 27 Apr 2005 14:36 GMT Creating a new profile is a fix for many things, not just this. If /cleanreminders doesn't work and /resetfolders doesn't work the next steps usually are to run Scanpst.exe (Inbox repair tool) and if that doesn't help then to create a new profile.
If I was using any badly written software that corrupted things regularly I'd uninstall it and use something else.

Do you mean how to enter both switches? Just open Start, Run and in that dialog enter the following, without the quotes but with the spaces before the switches:
"outlook.exe /resetfolders /cleanreminders"
Then press the Enter key.

Ken Slovak - [MVP - Outlook] - 03 Jul 2005 16:01 GMT And did you try using the startup switches /resetfolders and /cleanreminders? If those switches don't work to resolve the problem you may have to try creating a brand new profile and see if that works.

Although I have pop-up reminders set in Outlook 2003, when another program is open, e.g., Word, etc, they usually only appear in the task bar. Is there a way to force pop-ups to appear on top of other programs and stay there until dismissed/snoozed? Thanks! Brad

Ken Slovak - [MVP - Outlook] - 22 Jul 2005 15:00 GMT Or, if it started Outlook with no errors then other things to try are a brand new (not copied) profile, and not using any synch software if it's being used.
I've seen some synch software that copies Reminders and ends up creating dozens of Reminders folders (Reminders1, Reminders2, etc.) which throws Outlook for a complete loop. In that case the only fix is to use different software or not synch and use a MAPI tool to go into the mailbox or PST file and delete every hidden Reminders folder and then use /resetfolders.

Andy - 04 Oct 2005 19:10 GMT Hi Ken I have a problem that seems to be realted to this. I am running Outlook 2002 and have started recieving "reminders" for every mail that appears in my inbox. I can "Dismiss All" and then try to delete the mail in the inbox. I then recieve a message telling me that there are errors on my .pst file and I should run teh Inbox Repair Tool. I run this after quiting Outlook and I am told that there are no errors.
Returning to Outlook the same cycle repeats itself. Any ideas?
Ken Slovak - [MVP - Outlook] - 05 Oct 2005 14:31 GMT Did you try using the /cleanreminders and /resetfolders switches? You can also try the /cleanfreebusy switch. I'd also try running scanpst.exe 3 times, alternating each time with a hard drive scanner. Sometimes that helps.

Ken Slovak - [MVP - Outlook] - 25 Jan 2006 20:44 GMT Web access is something completely different. If those switches did not work then the next steps are to create a brand new profile (not a copy of your existing one) and if that fails a completely new PST file or mailbox.

Ken Slovak - [MVP - Outlook] - 26 Jan 2006 14:59 GMT You wouldn't have PST files if you are using an Exchange mailbox. The store is located in the EDB on the server. Not sure that means anything to you or that it's important.
I'd post this in an Exchange admin group to get their expert advice on the best way to do this. Make sure you post your Exchange version and SP level. I just play at being an Exchange admin on my own private Exchange server (or my Labrador does the admin work for me sometimes), I'm not a real Exchange admin.

Ken Slovak - [MVP - Outlook] - 07 Mar 2006 14:23 GMT It could be a lot of things. Some synch software corrupts the hidden Reminders folder or create duplicates of it, those switches fix that problem. Other things can corrupt the MAPI property that tells Outlook where the Reminders folder is located, /resetfolders resets those pointers.

After reading all the 55 posts before me :)
It still doesn't work for me. We use Outlook 2003 with SP2. The problem is as following:
When someone set an appointment request (for example for 3 hours from now), with the default 15 minutes reminder and show time as busy, I receive the appointment and approve it, but when I enter the appointment inside the calendar I can see that the reminder is off (gray).
I tried to do the following: 1) Uncheck the "Use Cached Exchange Mode" and restart the Outlook. 2) Use the command - outlook.exe /resetfolders /cleanreminders 3) Use the command - outlook.exe /cleanfreebusy 4) Delete the outlook profile and create a new outlook profile 5) Prayed the lord ;)
None of this helped.
Please advise, Thanks in advanced, Shahar.

I've tried 3 times to run Scanpst.exe as you and one of the other posts suggested. It didn't help for this problem and caused a new problem - it converted the .PST file from 253Mb to 150Kb. Fortunately, we marked the “create a backup” checkmark.
After continue investigating this issue, our IT manager (finally) found out the solution for this - he told us to run:
Outlook.exe /cleanrules
This command solved our problem. I could see the reminders of appointments again.
Thanks for your help, Shahar Peretz

Ken Slovak - [MVP - Outlook] - 22 Jun 2006 14:55 GMT The only other thing I can think of is to use OutlookSpy or MFCMAPI to see if you really have a Reminders folder, what its contents and MAPI restriction are and whether or not the PR_REM_ONLINE_ENTRYID and PR_REM_OFFLINE_ENTRYID properties match the EntryID's of the Reminders folder in online and offline modes.
Unless you're familiar with MAPI properties though something like that would probably need a lot of hand holding.

I also know of no KB articles or really any other documentation on any of this.
If you download OutlookSpy from www.dimastr.com and install it when Outlook isn't running it will show a new toolbar the next time Outlook is started. From there I can guide you as to what to look for but I need to know your Outlook version, whether using a PST file or Exchange mailbox and what type of accounts are feeding that mail store.

Select that folder and either double-click on it to open it or click the OpenEntry button.
See if there's a tab in the dialog labeled GetSearchCriteria, if so select it. You should see 4 folders listed at the left of the tab: Inbox, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks.
Select the GetContentsTable tab and see if your reminder items are listed there.
If you don't have your items listed or there is more than 1 folder labeled as Reminders (might be Reminders1 and so on) or the 4 folders weren't listed in the search criteria tab then something is not working correctly with the Reminders folder.
Close all the OutlookSpy dialogs and if you saw anything wrong there select IMsgStore again and open the Root Folder again. Select the Reminders folder in the GetHierarchyTable tab and click the Delete button. If you have other RemindersXX folders select them and also click Delete until all are removed.
Then close the dialogs and exit Outlook and in the Start, Run dialog type: outlook.exe /resetfolders Then press Enter.
See if that helps.

> Picked up OutlookSpy. I've got Outlook 2000 SR3, 9.0.0.6627, using a pst > file. I've got 2 email addresses from my own domain, a pacbell.net > account, > and a gmail account (using pop/smtp). > > If you need anything else to get me started, just say the word. Jes - 26 Jun 2006 16:55 GMT Happy Monday, Ken!
Printed out your wonderfully detailed instructions and found that quite a few entries had mapi errors. Made the modifications without difficulty using OutlookSpy. Didn't work.
Went back in and took another peek at the Hierarchy Table and found still one more mapi error in the rowID, so only deleted that entry. Still no reminders.
Each time I started Outlook with the /reset folders switch.
The only thing I can think of is to completely delete the calendar and re-create it. Seems a bit drastic, but the only other option I see is to completely erase Office and reinstall.
P.S. Hubby's Outlook works fine. Would it be worthwhile to look at his computer and compare some of the entries to those on mine?
Can't tell you how much I appreciate your help with this. It really is a problem for me as I've grown to depend on my computer.

Ken Slovak - [MVP - Outlook] - 27 Jun 2006 18:57 GMT I would first of all make sure Outlook is closed and run Scanpst.exe against your PST file. You can find it using Windows Explorer. Run it until it finds no errors in that file. Then after that try using the /resetfolders and /cleanreminders command switches when starting Outlook. Open the Start, Run dialog and in it type:
outlook.exe /resetfolders /cleanreminders
Make sure the spaces are there before the switches. Then press Enter.

Despite Scanpst.exe reporting no errors, the reminders are now working. It's my belief that the previous procedures also corrected other errors that weren't *yet* resulting in obvious operational problems.
Again, thank you for all your assistance in resolving this problem.

Envcat - 15 Feb 2007 18:32 GMT Ken, Thanks for being so helpful to everyone! I tried your suggested technique, but it didn't help. Do I need to shut down the computer or Outlook after doing that, before it works?
> Try starting Outlook with the /resetfolders and /cleanreminders switches. In > the Start, Run dialog: [quoted text clipped - 9 lines] > fix > > it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ken Slovak - [MVP - Outlook] - 15 Feb 2007 19:30 GMT Outlook should be shut down before running the command to start it in the Start, Run dialog of course. Other than that you shouldn't have to do anything.
If that doesn't work then I'd suggest in order:
1. Close Outlook and find ScanPST.exe using Windows Explorer. You might have to show hidden and system files and folders to see it. Make sure you know the location of your PST file so you can point ScanPST to it. Run ScanPST 3 times or until it doesn't find any errors. After that start Outlook again using the same /resetfolders and /cleanreminders switches.
2. If that doesn't work close Outlook. Then create a new profile. Do not copy the existing one. Point the new profile at your existing PST file as the data source. Use the Mail applet in the Control Panel to add a new profile. You will need the settings for your email accounts.
3. If that doesn't work set Outlook to use a new PST file instead of the existing one. If reminders work there then open the existing PST in Outlook and copy everything from that to the new one. Do not import.

Gary - 21 Jun 2008 14:07 GMT I ran “outlook.exe / resetfolders / cleanreminders” but I still have a problem with 2 reminders that I have even deleted the appointment completely, but still get a reminder for each every time I start Outlook 2007. Here are the error messages: Error message that I get if I try to dismiss the reminder – “Cannot turn off the reminder. You may be reminded again. Cannot locate recurrence information for this appointment” Error message that I get if I try to dismiss the reminder – “Cannot postpone the reminder. Cannot locate recurrence information for this appointment” Then when I click OK I get this error message – “ There is an error snoozing the reminder “Your Appointment”, Snooze operation terminated.”
Any other advise???

Nate - 25 Feb 2005 19:31 GMT Ok, I have a question regarding all of this. Is there a way to set up Office so that reminders will pop-up, even when Outlook isn't running? If so how? I can't figure it out. Thanks, Nate
Ken Slovak - [MVP - Outlook] - 25 Feb 2005 20:35 GMT No, Outlook must be running.

Ken Slovak - [MVP - Outlook] - 28 Feb 2005 14:30 GMT There's no command line switch for that but it's an easy macro to write. You could write a macro for that and put it in the Application_Startup() event handler in the ThisOutlookSession class module:
Private Sub Application_Startup() Dim oExpl As Outlook.Explorer
On Error Resume Next
Set oExpl = Application.ActiveExplorer If Not oExpl Is Nothing Then oExpl.WindowState = olMinimized End If End Sub

After that I receive all my reminders but an error as well (as well as when I just simply run Outlook), and reminders don't come up any more again:-( The error I receive: "There was a problem reading one or more of your reminders. Some reminders may not appear. Cannot locate recurrence information for this appointment." I use Outlook 2003 and it's been a problem for a month.
Any advice? Thanks!
