You shouldn't need to export PST files at all if that's what the data was in
originally -- just open the PSTs in Outlook on your personal machine using
File | Open. If you are trying to transfer items from an Exchange mailbox
to a local file then you'd export to a PST directly, no need for an OST.
PST is Outlook's native file format and there is usually no need to import
or export PST files. Only Outlook 98 and Outlook 2000 had separate Internet
Mail Only and Corporate/Workgroup modes -- Outlook 97, 2002 and 2003 only
have one mode and it works with both internet accounts and Exchange
mailboxes.
Once you have your data from work in a PST file, copy it to the laptop's HD
and remove the read-only attribute if it's set. Then in Outlook on your
laptop, go to File | Open | Outlook Data File (or Personal Folders File in
older versions) and select your PST. It will open as a separate set of
Personal Folders in your Folder List and you can either view the items right
from there or move/copy them to your laptop's personal folders if you like.

Jocelyn,
thank you for explaining this. I'm getting optimistic - but still
have one or two worries.
I don't know yet which Outlook version my new employer uses, but I
have Outlook 2000 on my laptop, running in Internet Mail Only
mode.
From what you say, I should be able to export a PST file from the
"Exchange Outlook" at work (no matter what version) - but it will
import as "a separate set of folders" on my laptop. I need to sync
the calendar on my laptop to my PDA (no USB ports at work) - will
this work when the calendar data are in a separate folder?? How
can I merge the data before syncing?
The same problem may, perhaps, arise the other way around. That
is, when I sync the PDA and laptop, any changes made on the PDA
should be transferred to the laptop. I should then be able to
export the updated calendar data the PST file, mail it to myself
at my work e-mail address, and restore the PST data there. But
will that work? That is - will the data integrate, or wind up in a
separate set of folders?
Regards,
Richard

The data would be separate. You should probably read the following pages
and see if you can figure out how to get all three machines synchronized
consistently (I only sync one machine with my PDA so I don't have personal
experience syncing a second PC as well).
