I have my Outlook calender saved under my personal
folders.  Whenever I try to make an appointment/new entry
on the calender and also click the reminder box, when I
try to save and close the appointment I get the following
message:

"The reminder will not appear because the item is not in
your calender or tasks folder."

I can then close the appointment window, it will appear on
the calender, and it will say it hasa reminder set, but
the reminder will never appear/work.

You must be using your default calendar folder for reminders to fire. If
your delivery is set to another location or if this is a sub-folder,
reminders will not fire.

To add this ability, see this page for an add-in that will help:

Reminders only work in the calendar that is in the same
information store where your e-mail is delivered.
