When I set my calendar to month view, I can drag the divider from the RHS of
the screen to reveal the date navigator and taskpad. BUT...whenever I come
back here from looking at something else, I lose the date navigator and
taskpad. Surely I must be able to get this view to persist?

Try checking off under the View menu - View->Taskpad.  Mine persists without
using this method, however.
