Lost contacts in Outlook 2000

I suddenly lost most of my 300+ contacts. However, a few of them where still
kept. Whatever caused this also caused the same contacts to be lost on my
IPAQ which was connected via MS ActiveSync ver. 3.5. I was able to restore
the information via synchronization with my Infone account on both devices.
Shortly after that the same thing happened, again leaving a few contacts.
This time synchronization with Infone did not restore the lost contacts
despite several attempts to do so. I did notice that with each attempt the
few contacts that remained had changed with the exception of one of them. I
also noticed that the few that did show up had a listing for a home fax
number, but the numbers where not telephone numbers. Rather they where of the
format showing a square followed by an 8 digit number which was different for
each contact with the exception of the first 4 numbers. This did not show
when any contact window was opened and none of the these contacts had a home
fax number.

I have McAfee Virusscan version 4.3.20 and McAfee Personal Firewall plus
version 6.6.6014 installed on the computer and both are set up to update
automatically.

Has anyone had a similar occurrence and does anyone have any ideas on how to
correct the underlying problem?

TIA

Unfortunately, "suddenly lost..." provides no clue whatsoever. I can think
of no instances in which Outlook just loses its data for no reason. I doubt
this is an Outlook issue. I strongly suspect this is a synchronization issue
and that you need to ask whoever supports your synchronization software or
in an Activsync/Pocket PC group.
I would also recommend you keep frequent backups of your data.
