Imported contacts email doesn't work

I imported several hundred of my contacts from a .csv file. All names and
email addresses came in without a hitch. I went to create a distribution list
and when I select "Add member" I get a . or ; on the right side without any
additional information.

I then tries selecting one of contacts, opened it, selected "New message to
Contact" and was given an error message. The email addresses are correct, I
can cut and paste them but I can't put them into a distribution list.

Is there a fix or a workaround? I really don't want to spend hours cutting
and pasting making a new contact list.

Thanks
