I'm using Outlook 2003.  Over the past I have added and deleted fields
that I no longer use.  I somewhat understand how the "user defined
fields for this item" and "user defined fields for this folder" work.
I have tried after my limited understanding not to make fields unless
I plan to use them since they hang around even if you delete them.

My question is can you delete "user defined fields for this item"
globally instead of going to each contact and deleting them manually.
Keep in mind I have 16,123 contacts so the manual method isn't a good
option.

If a field is defined in the item, you'd need to remove the field from the
item. The real question is: Why do you feel a need to do so?
