When searching for a contact in the Contacts Folder (Outlook 2003) how do I
get it to search all the subfolders by default? I have made subfolders for
different contacts so they are easier to manage but they do not show up in
the results unless I select "Search In" - "Chose Folders" and then check off
"Search Subfolders". Can this be made the default action.

Also, can these contacts be added to the address book?

Thanks.

Did you enable these subfolders as email address books in their properties?

Yes - just did that. Now if I use the search box in the tool bar it finds
them, but if I press the 'Find' button and search in the 'Look For' box it
still doesn't find them. I'm at least getting closer - thanks.

The Look For box will only contain preciously selected entries in your MRU
list. It's not what you'd use when you want to search all your Contact data.

What would I use then? It returns the most detailed data that I can find.

You've lost me. I thought you were complaining that the Look For dropdown
box did not contain the same list as your autocompletion cache. You can
still type whatever you want to search for in that box.
Advanced Find provides the most search options.

Russ,

I'll try and explain it better - thanks for hanging in :)

I have my 'Contacts' folder, and several subfolders - ie 'Hockey', 'Club'.
The contacts in these subfolders are not in the 'Contacts' folder.

If I type a name in the 'Look For' drop down box of a contact in a
subfolder, it is not found.  If I select "Search In" - "Chose Folders" and
then check off "Contacts" and "Search Subfolders" it will be found. All I
want (at least it sounds simple) is for the default search in 'Contacts' to
include the subfolders. Is this clearer now?

As I said, the Look For box is not your default search box. It will require
you to designate any non-default folders you want to have searched.
The search box you want to use is the one on the Standard Toolbar. It will
include all Contact Folders you have designated as email address books.
