Display WinXP Address Book in Last Name Order

Does anyone know how to get the WinXP Pro Address Book to display its entries
by LastName, Firstname order?  I'm using the MS Office Outlook 2003 Contacts
with WinXP Pro.  The "File As" field in Outlook is set for Lastname,Firstname
order, but the Windows Address Book still displays some entries when
composing an email message in the "firstname, lastname" order rather than by
"lastname, firstname" order.  This makes it difficult to retrieve contact
information when addressing email.

The Windows Address Book has nothing to do with Outlook unless you made a
very specific registry hack to force it to use Outlook instead of its own
data source. Did you do that?

No I didn't do that.  It's my understanding that the Outlook 2003 Contacts is
linked to the Windows Address Book, at least it was in earlier versions of
Outlook.  Has this changed?  If the names list that opens when I click on the
Address Book icon in Outlook or when trying to address an email message in
Outlook is not the Windows Address Book then what is it?  It doesn't really
matter, though.  All I'm trying to do is get that names list to list the
names in alphabetical order by lastname just like the entries in Contacts are
displayed.  I have the "File As" set to lastname, firstname format, but this
only seems to affect the Contacts entries in Outlook and not the entries that
are displayed when you're trying to locate names for an email addressee.

The Outlook Address Book is in no way linked to the Windows Address Book in
any of the currently supported versions of Outlook.
Go to Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or
address books > Outlook Address Book > Change. > Set your sort order there

Have already done that, but I'll check it again.  The Windows Address Book is
linked to (or at least shares Outlook Contacts info) with Outlook.  When
using Outlook email to address email messages, if you click on the To line,
the Address Book Window opens.  There is a field, as I recall, that says
"Display Names From" and in that field the "Contacts Folder" is selected.

When you click on the To: field in an Outlook New Message Window, you are
opening the Outlook Address Book, not the Windows Address Book.
There is no connection between the two.

I beg to differ with you on this.  Read my last response to you and try what
I suggested. Open Outlook.  Then put your pointer over the "Address Book"
icon.  Notice that in the Window that opens, at the top, it says "Address
Book" not "Outllok Address Book."  Near the top right of that window that
opens, there is a field which says "Show Names from the:".  It has a drop
down list where you can select the list of names you want to display in order
to choose how you want to address your email message.  One of those lists is
the "Contacts" list from Outlook application.

When I am trying to locate names from my Contacts list in attempting to
address an email message, some of names are not displayed alphabetically by
lastname, firstname format.  However, if I go to the Contacts folder
directly, without opening a new email message window, all the Contacts
entries are displayed and filed in the lastname, firstname format.  If this
is the case in Contacts, then why don't they appear in the same format when
selecting them from the same list when addressing and email message?

My posts are correct. When you are opening the address book in Outlook, it
is the Outlook Address Book, not the Windows Address Book.
I have already posted instructions on how to sort the Outlook Address Book.
Only you can figure out the discrepancies. If you need help, I would suggest
posting the settings you selected and what you think is not working for you.
If you chose to sort by the File As... field, I would also suggest examining
the File As... fields for the Contacts that are not sorting correctly.

I've done t hat (checked the "File As" field for the names that are not
displayed correctly in the "Select Names" window when addressing an email
using Outlook).  Your suggested solution still does not fix the problem.

It works for everyone else. Retrace your steps.
Your contention is that you have set your Outlook Address Book to sort by
the File As... field, but when you examine a Contacts File As... field you
find that the Outlook Address Book fails to sort that Contact by its File
As... field? Even after you have restarted the Address Book Service to
reflect your setting changes? That behavior simply cannot be reproduced.

The answer to your question is yes.  The Outlook "Contacts" entries are
displayed correctly (lastname, firstname) according to the "File As" settings,
as long as I stay inside the Contacts folder of Outlook.  But if I go to the
Inbox folder and try to address an email by clicking on "To" the "Select
Names" window pops up listing names in the "firstname, lastname" order, even
though the "Show Names from the" field says Outlook Addres Book Contacts.  A
very puzzling problem.

Why don't you list the steps you used to correct the problem. I suspect you
still did not do what I suggested in my second 12/9 post. Use those
instructions to set your Sort order to "File As..." and then restart
Outlook.

Russ,  I assure you I did what you told me to do in your 12/9 post even
before I posted my first request for help in this forum.  I found those
instructions from the Microsoft knowledge base.  I tried it, but it did not
solve the problem.  The sort order in the "File As" field for Outlook
indicates lastname, firstname, but when address an email the names are sorted
just the opposite.

Russ,

I apologize.  I misread what you said and click on changing the existing
email account rather than changing the existing directory.  After I did that,
it fixed the problem.  Thanks so much for your help.  I really appreciate it.
