I have my contacts coded by categories and I want to produce address labels
for all in a certain category

Use the By Category of your Contacts Folder view to group your Contacts.
Select the Contacts in the category you want.
Tools > Mail Merge...
Do the merge to "selected Contacts"

Russ, this is an odd ?, but do folks like yourself work for MSFT or do you
help people in this community just because?

Sorry to post here, just curious how all the great people like yourselves
make their money.

These are peer-to-peer newsgroups. No one here works for Microsoft. We make
our money the same as everyone else. We go to work every day. Most of us
post here because someone once answered a question we had here and we're
just returning the favor.
