I have now converted the Access db to the 2002 format &
tried updating the Outlook contacts with that information
& met with the same results.

Any thoughts?

You still didn't map your fields correctly, then.

How could the fields be mapped incorrectly if the email
address is displayed in email field?

Somehow I didn't find your solution until just now...
THANKS! Though the email address still displays in the
same field in my contact list(s), now the address appears
in the "To" field when I double click.

Now I just have to figure out how to get the display as
to show the name, not the email address... :) Oh the joy
of figuring out new software ;)

Thanks again!
