PAB to Contacts, Outlook 2000

I replaced my computer and set up O2k on teh new machine. Found the old psts
and got them set up nicely.

However
I believe that my old address book is in a pab file.
I cannot get O2k  to look at the pab file. From the microsoft site I have
found out that new installs of O2k don't allow a PAB option, and therefore I
must import my pab into contacts. OK

However
The import is only a quarter successful. I get an error message saying that
the destination folder is smaller than the recommended size, and then it
bombs out and generates an error report. When I then re-open O2k I find that
only a quarter or less of my address book has been imported.

What can I do ?

For infor.
O2k was set up as internet only mode (perhaps that was the wrong thing to do
?)
I have set to allow large tables.
I can view the size of the contacts folder (92k ? I think) but not change
it.
If I could use a Personall Address Bok instaed I would as I prefer to keep
contacts separate from the pst.

Thanks in advance

Are you certain you were using a PAB? Outlook has not used a PAB for over 6
years. It is unlikely you were. The PAB was replaced by the Outlook Address
Book and all data is stored in your Contacts Folder.
Have you just tried configuring your Outlook Address Book?

Yes the file is called mailb2.pab

I was out outlook 97 for many years and upgraded to oulook2000 last year.

As for re-configuring the Outlook Address Book I cannot find options other
thatn the order in which things are displayed.

Thanks.

What makes you think you can't use your PAB? You can still add it to any
version of Outlook. You're just way overdue to migrate to Contacts/Outlook
Address Book.

At the great risk of repetition.

I cannot get outlook to look at the pab. The microsoft knowledge base does
give revelation that this is a feature on a new install of Outllok 2000 and
it gives instructions for using Contacts instead.

Then when I do  follow those instructions and import from pab into contacts
I get an error messagge saying that the contacts folder is less than the
3000 (k?) it desires, and then only a portion of my pab is imported.

Russ
Thanks for the help but the tone is a bit off !

I didn't get a note from Bill Gates saying that it was now passe to use PAB
, and when I loaded O2k last year (upgrading a previous Outlook) I had no
problems. However this new install on a new pc has changed things.

Cheers

Sorry Bill didn't send you a personal message to that effect.
I never asked you to import your PAB. I was asking why you felt you could
not add the PAB Service to your profile. To my knowledge that feature has
been left intact for legacy purposes like yours. It still exists in my
latest installation of Outlook 2003.

OK

Sorry for my weak attempts to covey frustration. The Microsoft Knowledge
base has an article (number not kept buy me, sorry) that says a new install
of 2000 doesn't have it but an upgrade does.
When I try and add a service I get routed to ldap.
If you can tell me waht I am doing wrong I would be grateful.

Make sure you are using the full version of Outlook: Corporate/Workgroup
mode, not Internet Mail Only.

Thanks

That made the difference. I wish I had made it clear in the beginning that I
was using IMO.
Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] - 18 Dec 2004 00:47 GMT
IMO is also long gone and was the only mode that could not support the PAB
because it does not have full MAPI capability. All full versions of Outlook
support the PAB and continue to do so, but that may not last much longer.
Migrate now while you have the chance.
