I can not make changes or new entries to my contacts, tasks or calendar.  Is
this a defect in my software or something I turned off or on without knowing
it?

You posted no information.
Why can't you?
What steps are you using and what happens when you try?
What Outlook version?

I am not sure why I can't.  The computer is only a couple months old.  I am
running MS Outlook  2003.  When I open contact or calendar the "save & close"
and the "new" are not showing as highlighted making them inaccessible.  I was
using it just fine until a week ago, at that point I selected service pak 1 &
2 and upgraded.  Any ideals?

Never seen this one. To what Service Packs are you referring?
Have you tried using the Inbox Repair Tool to repair your Outlook Data File?
