did the standard back up procedure for Outlook 2002 to a pst file. I have
desgned custom forms in contacts and customised views by adding my custom
fields to them.  When I imported the pst file back into Outlook 2002 on the
same P/C non of my custom fileds were in the views or user defined fileds
box. ( for when designing the view)  The fileds were still showing on the
forms with the information in but that was it.

When I clicked on the contact that I had linked to each calender appointment
I got a message saying this is not available for the selected item and it did
not link through to the contact record

Can anyone help me please as I need to customise Outlook but Ialso need it
to back up properley. Help!!

Your mistake was importing, which copies only data, not custom views, forms,
rules, etc.

If by "standard back up procedure," you mean that you copied your .pst file,
then you should just point Outlook toward that file as its default store.

If you want contact links to survive, then the file needs to be located in
the same place as the original file that you backed up.
