I am experiencing random system freezes. Recently, I started receiving the
following message when trying to address an email message:
The address list could not be displayed. The Contacts folder associated
with this address list could not be opened, it may have been moved or
deleted, or you do not have permissions. For information on how to remove
this folder from the Outlook Address Book, see Microsoft Outlook Help.
I can click on Contacts and see the list. When I attempt to get an address
from the Contacts, I get the above message. It gets tedious when I send
email to someone and I have to manually look up the address.
Microsoft Outlook help was no help. I have tried a repair of Office XP in
hopes that would solve my problem. Nothing has worked.

Russ,
I have the same problem and same message that Ted mentions.
I went to the link you sent him, did everything listed and am still unable
to associate the address book with my contacts.
This may be helpful:
My problem occured after I re-installed my outlook.pst file. (My computer
had been taken over by a spammer and had to wipe the entire hard drive and
re-install all prtograms and files). I had moved my outlook.pst file to a
folder outside the standard location and everything worked the same, I think
email addressing as well,. but not sure. Then I moved the Outlook file back
into the defalult location C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.

All you have to do then is remove the Outlook Address Book Service, restart
Outlook, then add it back.
That should reset the connection.

No, not at all. It won't touch your data--just the address book display of
your data.

Russ,
I followed these directions, and it didn't change anything. When I open a
new e-mail message, and click on "To", I get the error message that the
contacts folder cannot be displayed. Clicking OK opens up the address book.
If I go up to the folder Drop Down, there are two "Contacts" listed. The
second one has all my contacts, but I have to change each time. Please
help!!!

Just remove the invalid reference to a Contacts Folder here:
Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or address
books > Outlook Address Book > Change.

I am getting the same "...address list could not be displayed..." message,
but under different circumstances. When I click the "To" button on the new
mail screen I get the message "...could not be displayed. The Contacts
folder associated with this address list could not be opened...". I can
click OK and then navigate to my address book.
I upgraded from Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2003 yesterday. In Outlook 2000 I
could click the "To: button and automatically select from my contacts.
Can you help please? Thanks.

You corrupted your Outlook Address Book settings in the migration.
Remove the Outlook Address Book. Restart Outlook. Re-add it.
Instructions are all in the article I posted.
