I have recently installed Outlook 2003. Now when I compose an email, the
auto-complete function dredges up email addresses that were updated long ago.
When I look in Contacts, I see the new email adress and do not see th eold
email address, so I can't delete it. But still the old email address appears
in the Address Book.
That's because autocomplete has nothing to do with your Contacts.
This information is stored in the autocompletion cache.
Remove individual addresses from the autocompletion cache by highlighting
the entry when presented in the suggested names list (use your arrow key to
migrate to the entry) and then hitting your Delete key before you tab out of
the field. To clear the entire cache, follow the instructions here:

Thanks for this. I followed the instructions and renamed the entire
autocomplete cache. However if I type in part of the addressee's name and
choose 'Check Names', the Check Names dialogue box still offers me an old
entry that I deleted from my Contacts long ago, and it doesn't offer me the
entry that is currently there. It seems as though it is looking somewhere
else first where all the old names might be stored and never gets as far as
looking at the COntact entry that is currently there.

Now you're asking an entirely different question that has nothing to do with
autocompletion or its cache.
If autoresolution is pulling up an old name, then only you can determine
why. You have something misconfigured. By definition, you have that address
stored somewhere in a Contacts Folder that the Outlook Address Book Service
is searching, or you failed to restart the Outlook Address Book Service
after making a change.
