I am setting up a DSL line with external modem.  When I try to use the auto
dial feature of MS Contacts, I hear the modem dialing from the computer but
when I pick up the connected phone, I still have a dial tone.  Apparently,
the phone and modem are not properly configured.  Any ideas?  One help text
message indicated that I must use a standard 56k modem.  Is this correct?

You're not really asking an Outlook question. Outlook has no role in this.
Outlook uses the Windows dialer which of course must have access to an
analog phone line.
