Last Name First doesn't work in for Outlook 2003 new contacts

When I add a new contact in Outlook 2003 as "First Name Last Name" in "Full
Name" field and go to "Check Name", the names are reversed with Last listed
First, etc.  The only way I can get it to work is to type the name as Last
First in the Full name field, then everything seems to work.  Is there a
setting, or a bug in 2003?

The Full Name field has nothing to do with sorting in the Outlook Address
Book.
Go to Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or
address books > Outlook Address Book > Change. > Set your sort order there

Russ,

I have tried everything you suggested.  I did it several days ago, but it
didn't work.  The setting you pointed out won't allow me to do what they are
designed to do.

It does for everyone else. Explain in detail what you are doing and what
isn't working for you.

This is the complete history.  We were using outlook express for our email
and contacts.  We switched to Outlook (2002) and imported our contacts.  We
then upgraded to Outlook 2003.  I think the problem started when we then
imported contacts from another computer used by my wife's social club.  They
were also in 2003 format.

When I add a new contact in Outlook 2003 as "First Name Last Name" in "Full
Name" field and go to "Check Name", the names are reversed with Last listed
First, etc.  The only way I can get it to work is to type the name as  Last,
First in the Full name field, then everything seems to work and the name
under "File As" is Last, First (which is the way we want the names to be
listed in contacts and Distribution Lists).  The ultimate goal is to have the
names listed in alphabetical order by last name in contacts and distribution
lists.

Have you examined the settings you specified for the format of the Full Name
and File As fields?

Russ,

First, thanks for all your help.
I have been able to get the Full Name and File As fields to work when adding
a new contact.  The thing that still doesn't work is on the right side of the
new contact screen.  When I enter an email address, the "Display as" shows
First Name with e-mail address.  I would like to have it Display as just Last
Name, First Name

You can only change the Display As field manually for each individual
Contact. The format of the Display As field is of no real consequence for
most users.
