When I open a new email and click on the "book" symbol to get the address
book, then a drop down comes down with a error message...no address book..,
click ok then another dropdown shows with a blank listing. Then when I go
the top Rt box and click there are 4 listings, 3 are dummy with nothing in
them and the fourth one also branded "Contacts" has all my addresses.

How can I get rid of these 3 useless listings. On my machine I have only ONE
xxx.PST and one mailbox.PAB files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Remove the dud listings here:
Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or address
books > Outlook Address Book > Change.

There is no reason for you to be using a PAB file. Transfer its contents to
your Contacts Folder and remove it as well.
