I used to be able to type letters & Outlook would 'jump' to matching
contacts.  Now, typing does nothing unless I select a contact with the mouse
1st.

Describe what you changed between "used to" and "now."
Include your Outlook version.

I use Outlook 2003 - & don't think any
changes were made, except for maybe just standard Windows updates - just
wasn't able to use the keyboard to search for contacts when I tried.  The
same thing happened with a previous version of Outlook, but when I upgraded
to 2003, the feature was restored.  I think I must have mistyped something
when contacts was open - but don't know what I did or how to reverse it....

Let's try this, then.
Explain what isn't happening that you think should.
It is impossible to discern from your posts so far.

Are you talking about using your keyboard while in the Contacts Folder?
For that to work in Outlook 2003, you must turn off the Outlook Today view
of your Personal Folders.

I'm sorry - did I miss the solution in this thread somewhere?  I have
exactly the same issue... just upgraded to Outlook 2003 from Outlook
2000.  It used to be that when you clicked on the contacts button, you
could then immediately follow it by the first few letters of the
contact you were looking up.  Now, in 2003, it seem you have to click
again in the contacts window to activate a contact before it will
repsond to keyboard input.

The thread you replied to contained the solution.
Are you using a news reader?

Thank you Russ.  I am using Google groups, apparently there is
something missing using their thread viewer.  Your solution works
fine... I sort of liked the Outlook Today view on startup though -
guess I can't have my cake and eat it too.

Apparently not.
Maybe Microsoft will fix this some day.
If we're lucky, they'll even tell us when they do.
