distribution lists - basic info required

Hi,

can anyone explain the way distribution list entries are associated with
contacts, and with seemingly "dead-end" email addresses.

I think it's the same question as   "explain the different icons used for
entries in the distribution list".

At a higher lever....should I be using distribution lists at all (instead of
contact categories) as they seen....well....DREADFUL.

DL's are dreadful.
Most of us do not use them for that reason.
We use Categories or separate Contact subfolders instead.
