MichaelJS - 23 Feb 2005 06:19 GMT For some reason, contacts I have added recently cannot be found using the search function. Has something changed in recent times in Outlook with the various security patches? This has not been the case in the past... Help!
Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] - 23 Feb 2005 11:51 GMT Not normal behavior. Ensure that you know which Contacts Folder you are adding the Contacts to and that this folder has been enabled as an email address book in its properties.

I only seem to have one contacts folder anyway... I can search for other records and find them okay... it's just that new ones go into a black hole... I sync okay with my Sony Ericsson P910i and the record transfers onto that without a hassle, it's just the search does not work... What next?

This has not been the case in the past... Help! Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] - 24 Feb 2005 01:33 GMT Provide more detail on what "search" functions are not working, please. Make certain that you have restarted Outlook before you attempt to access any changes you have made.

MichaelJS - 24 Feb 2005 22:51 GMT When I simply search for a contact, e.g. New contact was Bill Smith with all details updated. If I use the search function and type "smith" and go the response is "Outlook could not find the contact"... If I go alphabetically, the contact is present...
Some change appears to have happened because it is not all contacts in the database. First noticed about two or three weeks ago... maybe one month...

I can't see what you're doing.

In my toolbar, I have a window with "Type a Contact to Find"... if I type the contact name, e.g. Paul Thomas in the window and hit enter, it will search the Contacts database and bring up the contact. Recently added contacts however present the Windows dialogue box that says "Outlook could not find the requested contact". If I hit the alpha tab down the right side of the screen and scroll to Thomas, the contact is there and can be displayed in full...
Does that clarify it sufficiently?
Thanks in hope.

Yep, it has been set up that way...could that be the cause?
I have a desktop PC at home that is also running XP Pro and Office 2003 and do not have the same problems with the contacts I cannot search for on the notebook.

> Hi Russ, > [quoted text clipped - 93 lines] >> >> >> >> > past... >> >> >> >> > Help! CT - 31 Mar 2005 23:20 GMT I have the same issue I think. I think the problem is that it only searches the email address. Please see if the contacts you can not find do not have email addresses. This is the case with my problem. I could definitely search for any field before now it appears to just look in the email field. Any suggestions?
CT - 31 Mar 2005 23:28 GMT Has something to do with PST files and other contact folders. If you create a new email mapi profile it should fix the problem.
deandepetra - 12 Sep 2005 06:18 GMT I do believe I have the same problem. I try searching contacts based on there company name "Reece" and it only brings up 1 contact from this company plus 2 other names that don't have any relevance to this company.
I've checked to see if the other "Reece" contacts have email addresses and they don't!
CT - could you explain further your solution "...creat a new email mapi profile...."? If I understand correctly does this mean basically that I need to get an email address for them?
> Has something to do with PST files and other contact folders. If you > create a new email mapi profile it should fix the problem. Diane Poremsky [MVP] - 13 Sep 2005 03:37 GMT the lack of an email address shouldn't matter, unless you are specifically searching for email addresses. Make a new profile from control panel, mail. http://www.outlook-tips.net/beginner/new_profile.htm

Diane Poremsky [MVP] - 19 Sep 2005 04:32 GMT if the search isn't working correctly you may have a corrupt profile - making a new profile is the only way to correct it.

RaulRuben - 04 Aug 2008 02:20 GMT I have the same exact problem in Vista with MS Outlook 2007. I tried rebuildind the index from Control Panel and nothing. I inserted this contact Robyn Whatever and it cannot find it. But if I go into a new email and click the "To" button, it finds it. Nothing I add or change now will be found. It keeps saying that it is in the middle of indexing but that has gone on for days. Something is wrong with the program because I have done nothing different. I have almost 400 contacts and this is a pain.

RaulRuben - 06 Aug 2008 21:28 GMT I will check what the WDS engine is. But something is wrong with the Contact Indexing. I sync my contacts (almost 400) to my phone (Blackjack II), and on my phone I can search anything and it comes up superfast. On Outlook Contacts there is a banner on top that says it is not done indexing, and that has been there for days, even when I re index everything. It sucks and I did nothing to it for it to happen that way. It is a program error I bet and it will be fixed in time, and nobody is saying anything in the meantime.

This has not been the case in the past... > >> >> Help! df1sp - 23 Aug 2008 15:52 GMT Hi all - I am having the exact same problem (Outlook 2007): first it started a few months ago out of the blue with new contacts not being found when typed into the "search all contact items" box (instant search); then some weeks later, no contacts were returned at all....even if I type in just one letter, say "e", which should return just about any contact. It makes contacts pretty useless, and VERY frustrating. I did everything I can think of, turn indexing on/off, rebuild the index, also tried to use the scanpst tool, but it comes back "scnpst32.dll is missing". ("Microsoft is looking for a solution", but of course does not come back with one....). Btw., I can search mails and that works fine.... All the other PC's in my home do not have the problem (yet!). I suspect it all started with some update, but I cannot put my fingers on it, since it's automatic.
The most frustrating part is that A LOT OF USERS are having the problem, but no one from MS is showing up in the various threats, or working to address the problem. There is clearly a fundamental bug here that needs to be fixed! df1sp
