I have deleted an email address from my contacts list and replaced it with a
new one, but when i send emails to that contact, outlook still inserts the
old address.

How can i permanently delete the old address?

Impossible to say.
You have not provided your Outlook version nor the method by which you are
inserting the address.
We cannot just makes guesses.

many thanks - im using outlook 2003, in a new pc. actually i had the same
problem in outlook 2002 on a different pc.

I enter the contact details in the normal way for adding a contact and i
have made sure that in the contact's email details there are no other email
addresses , eg nothing under email 2 or 3.

But still when i enter the contact name in a new email message, the
auto-insert function still just puts in the old address - whihc i typically
wont notice until i get a reject message later that the address was not valid.

You still did not clarify how you are entering the address.
The fact that you referred to "autoinsert" suggests that you aren't using
your Contact data at all. You are using the autocompletion cache.
Your choices, therefore are to enter addresses from your Contact data or to
delete old entries from your autocompletion cache.
Remove individual addresses from the autocompletion cache by highlighting
the entry when presented in the suggested names list (use your arrow key to
migrate to the entry) and then hitting your Delete key before you tab out of
the field. If your autocomplete list contains only a single entry, use the
directions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;289975

To clear the entire cache, follow the instructions here:

I don't think there was any reason to be so rude to the previous poster.
It is absolutely obvious what the problem is.  I have the same issue.

My boss uses Outlook XP.  While she deletes incorrect emails from her
Contacts list, she still has the old email come up when she types the name
of the recipient in the To:  box in an Outlook xp email.

This is not acceptable.  1.  the new email address does not even come up as
an option.  2.  the old email should be deleted from all caches once it is
deleted from within the Contacts folder.

Is there some way to permanently prevent this from happening, other than by
deleting the old email address, from the To:  bar, manually and entering
the information more than once?  This is not something she is willing to do.

In other words, is there some sort of actual, permanent, fix to this
PROBLEM.

Please don't give me some rude reply about not having enough information.
If you happen to know the program, the first question that the previous
poster put up would have been enough for you to answer politely.

Russ,

I'm facing same problem mentioned earlier on.  I don't understand your
answer.  When having an email address deleted and replaced by a new one, when
typing related name, old (deleted) email address keeps showing up.  I CANNOT
STAND IT.   When deleted, bye bye, it should be gone permanently.

Can you help?
