Outlook finds obsolete email address rather than the current one

When I type a person's name in the "To" space of a new email, Outlook 2000
sometimes returns a previously deleted obsolete email address for that person
rather than the current address shown in that person's current Outlook
record. To correct this in past I have saved the record with a blank email
address field, then opened it again and resaved it with the new address. Some
records resist all eforts to get rid of the reference to the old address,
even by replacement of the entire record.
1. Is there a procedure to fix this? Office Repair did not help.
2. Where do old deleted addresses hide so I can go there and zap it?
Thanks.
