I reloaded Outlook 2003. Copied the save datafile from the previous
installation into the directory. All messages were intact. All contacts were
intact. But when I went to address a new message by clicking on the to button
a window appeared saying "the address list could not be displayed. the
contacts folder associated with this address could not be opened. it may have
been moved or you do not have permissions"

If I enter the first letter of the contact, all contacts with that letter
appear.

Please help.

Never overwrite a PST file. You will corrupt your profile.
At a minimum you have corrupted your Outlook Address Book settings. Reset
them here:
Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or address
books > Outlook Address Book > Change.

If you have more problems, you will need to create a new profile from
scratch and then use the correct method for configuring your Outlook Data
