I have succesfully exported my contact files from my laptop (Windows 98,
Outlook2000) to my new PC (XP, Outlook 2003) However the Master catagory list
in 2003 is just the default list and does not include the many catagories
that I created in Outlook 2000.
I started to run a migrate settings wizard but it requires me to run the XP
disc in my laptop.  I can not do this because the laptop operating system
needs to be reloaded. (hence, the need for a new PC)  I have the laptop hard
drive set up in an external hard drive enclosure and connected to the PC via
USB port.
Is there a way to pull the catagory settings from version 2000 on the
external hard drive to version 2003 on the PC?

Great stufff Russ, Exacty what I was looking for if my laptop OS was
functioning properly. I currently have the hard drive from the laptop set up
in an external enclosure and connected to the PC via USB. I am a rookie here
but I don't think I have access to the registry on the hard drive in it's
current form?
If I reinstall the OS on the laptop do I lose the information currently
stored in Outlook?
Thanks.

Your Outlook data should be intact. The file you need is your Personal
Folders file (*.pst) It's where all the mail, calendar, contacts etc are
stored.

Take a look at these pages for info on Outlook data backup or transfer:
