Outlook 2003. I am not quite clear (or very unclear) about how distribution
lists work.

1. What exactly does the "Update Now" button do when editing a distribution
list? Is does not appear to update anything.

2. How may I tie the entries in a distribution list to the actual contact
records for those same people? This way when an email address is updated,
the distribution list is updated, when a contact is deleted the person is
also deleted from the distribution list, etc.

I have never seen the Update Now button work. It appears to be just for
show.

Okay it looks like if you build your distribution list (DL)
by using the "Select Members" button in the DL editor, then you get a
connection to the address card in Contacts. Then when an email address is
changed in one of the contacts contained in the DL, using the "Update Now"
button updates the email address in the DL.

That is how it is supposed to work. It rarely does and if so, not for long.
It appears only to work for Contacts created in the same installation of
Outlook in which the DL is then created. Contacts brought over from earlier
versions seem no to work.
