I used the instructions in help (ha011053931033.aspx).  When I try to copy
the file (backup file) to disc I get an error. It says an error occured do
you want to retry or cancel.  I t won't work.

How to I simply make a copy of all contacts that I can use on new computer

List all the steps you used more clearly. Be sure you include how you
created this file and moved it to a CD. You seem to be having problems with
your file transfers, not Outlook.

Yes, of course you would. You aren't following the direction is the article
at all.
You cannot access a PST file on a CD. You must have read/write access to a
PST file. Move the file to your hard drive and remove its read only
attribute.
Then do not import it. Open it.
