You must start a merge from a public folder from Outlook, not Word. I haven't seen the error you describe. Maybe Help | Detect and Repair would be a good idea.

I am seeing the same problem on a number of PC's, all using Office 2003
professional. This problem is happening when trying to mail merge from
Outlook contacts in a users profile, not from public contacts.
We can merge from Word.
We have tried Detect and Repair, we have made sure the OS and Office are
fully updated.
And I have scoured TechNet for an answer to no avail.
TIA for any help

Does the problem occur no matter what contacts folder you start the merge from in Outlook? Have you tried creating a new mail profile and testing with that? Did you try the actions in KB290721?
