Nicknames lost on synchronization with Palm Zire; nicknames not found on exported backup

I had nicknames manually listed in the details section of each contact.
Essentially, this field contained the name as the person wished to be
addressed.  I faithfully backed up my contacts by exporting to a pst file.
However, when I rescued the contacts after a crash on my Palm Zire, the
nickname field is empty.  (The backup was done on my laptop, not on the
Palm)  How can I get these back without manually doing this?

That's the wrong way to back up.  Exporting can lose information.  A simple
copy of the PST with Outlook closed is correct.

I do know that details are part of the data included in an export to a PST,
since I just tried it.  I also know that syncing with a Pocket PC does not
seem to include some of this information, since I just changed the nickname
in a contact's details and my ActiveSync didn't inform my iPAQ that a change
had occurred.  There is no nickname field on an iPAQ, as far as I can tell.
Maybe a Palm-based PDA is different, but maybe not.
